INDIA to get 10 BOEING C-17s

The cabinet committee on security (CCS) has approved proposal to buy 10 C-17 heavy lift aircraft worth $4.1 billion from US-based Boeing.

CCS has cleared the purchase of aircrafts from US through Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and the deal is hailed as the biggest defense deal between two countries.

The last big defense deal with US is $2.1 billion for procurement of eight P-8I maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft from Boeing through direct commercial sales in 2009.

With the defense deal, India becomes the biggest fleet owner of C-17 outside US and the commitment to purchase addition aircrafts may cement the relation to greater extent.

Boeing C-17 is used for rapid strategic airlift of troops and cargo to main operating bases, and forward-operating bases, throughout the world. It can also perform tactical airlifts, medical evacuation, and airdrop missions.
