Nobody was hurt in the Monday incident and the passengers later left Dusseldorf again for the Canary Islands on a substitute plane, DPA reported.
The smouldering was observed in a ceiling lamp over a galley. Cabin crew put it out with a fire extinguisher. Smouldering combustion without flames often generates toxic smoke.
The A330 plane was back on the ground again 13 minutes after take-off Monday afternoon. Fire engines stood by at the runway but were not needed. Germany's air accidents agency is investigating.
