UK transport secretary to set new aviation rules.

Philip Hammond, the UK Transport Secretary is reviewing aviation safety in the UK. He has stated that he is aware that the current regime is expensive to airlines and inconvenient to passengers and so they are trying to come up with a more passenger friendly way to do things.

He said that he is looking to change the government’s approach so that they set the security outcomes rather than the process for reaching that outcome. This should give airports more flexibility in the way that they do things, to help it be more efficient and cost effective for them as well as much quicker and easier for passengers. It means that they will not expect all airlines to fit in to one security method but they can do something which fits in with their way of working.

Hammond went on to explain that security will still be of the utmost importance and they will oversee all of the new methods and proposals to ensure that security standards stay as high as they are now. All operators in the industry will be expected to develop a security management system which will show their commitment to high security and illustrate how they will deliver the necessary security outcomes. There will also be auditing and regulators overseeing what is done to make sure that both the company and the regulator are checking to make sure that things are being done correctly. It will be November, when things are expected to move forward with this proposal.
